Matthew Hatchwell
WCS Europe Chief Executive
Matthew is the Chief Executive of WCS Europe, which is a member of the global network of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). WCS Europe works closely with WCS programmes worldwide, with a special focus on Spatial Planning to address climate change issues, the impacts of extractive industry and the balance between conservation and human livelihoods in Central Africa. Matthew directed the WCS country programme in Madagascar and the WCS office in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, prior to moving back to Europe in 2002. In Congo, he helped establish Nouabale-Ndoki National Park and co-managed, with government counterparts, a capacity-building programme for protected area managers nationally. In Madagascar, he was instrumental in the creation of Masoala and Sahamalaza/Iles Radama National Parks, completed the Masoala National Park management plan in 1998, and remains closely involved in the sustainable financing of protected areas in Africa as a board member of the Sangha Tri-National Trust Fund. He is co-author of books on Masoala and on the role of zoos and aquaria in in situ wildlife conservation.

Martin Callow
WCS Europe Senior Programme Officer
Martin’s role in implementing WCS Europe’s strategic plan includes the provision of programmatic support - coupled with raising funds in Europe - towards sustaining the growth of WCS's Global Conservation Programmes and WCS Europe's own conservation initiatives. Martin completed his MSc in Applied Marine Sciences in 1995 and then worked in the Seychelles for the Royal Geographical Society coordinating a programme focussed on supporting coral reef research and marine protected area management. He joined WCS in 2007 as the Fiji country program director, running a community-based conservation programme, using ecosystem-based principles, and integrating research results with traditional ecological knowledge. Martin has also advised the UK Government on the development of environmental education programmes for young people. He is a member of IUCN’s Commission for Ecosystem Management. He has published scientific publications on the islands and coral reefs of the southern Seychelles and the Aldabra World Heritage Site, and authored a variety of technical and management documents.

Barbara Helfferich
WCS European Policy Director
Barbara has more than 18 years of experience in European policy making. She worked in the non-governmental sector as well as in the European Commission. As Sectary general of the European Women’s Lobby she successfully established one of the biggest and most influential European NGOs in Brussels. In 1992, the European Commission recruited her to become member of cabinet of the European Social Affairs Commissioner, a post which she held for five years until she was appointed European spokesperson for the environment. In October 2011, she became European Policy Director for WCS in Brussels. She holds a Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University as well as a Master’s degree in journalism and international communications.

Victoria Cordi (Europe)
WCS’s ‘Ocean Giants’ Senior Programme Officer
As Senior Programme Officer for WCS’s Ocean Giants Programme, Victoria provides central programmatic and fundraising support to field projects and is involved in facilitating the strategic planning processes for sea turtles, sharks and cetaceans. She joined Ocean Giants after finishing her masters’ degree in Conservation Biology at Columbia University in 2010. Before going to study in the US with a Fulbright scholarship, Victoria worked in sea turtle conservation for about four years in different countries including Costa Rica, Nicaragua (for a WCS project), Mexico, and Uruguay. She also holds a Licenciatura en Ciencias Biológicas from Comahue National University in Argentina, her home country. She is now working for WCS from London, based at the WCSE office.
